Silicone breast implants have a more natural feel than the saline variety, as the gel mimics natural breast tissue. However, as of this writing silicone implants are only available for reconstructive surgery and revision operations, not for new augmentation procedures.
The reason that only saline implants are available is due to the potential health complications that exist should one of them rupture within the body. Unlike the saline solution which is relatively harmless, the silicone gel escaping into the bloodstream could cause serious problems.
There are new silicone implants currently being tested called cohesive gel implants that have a thicker gel structure, reducing the likelihood of the substance leaking into the body.
However, with the new or conventional silicone gel breast implants, there is always the potential for problems, including capsular contracture (the formation of hard scar tissue around the implant), wrinkling, loss of sensation in the nipple and undesirable results such as assymetry.
It's also important to note that silicone breast implants do not last forever, and you will more than likely have to have them removed at some point due to a rupture or other complication. Also, breast augmentation surgery is not covered by health insurance - with return visits and follow-up surgical procedures, the costs can really pile up.
There are alternatives to breast surgery for those not willing to risk health complications and poor results. More and more women are turning to natural breast enlargement to increase their bust size.
Natural alternatives are becoming quite popular these days, with new scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of herbal supplements for promoting larger, fuller breasts. Although more research needs to be conducted, so far the results are promising.
Before you consider silicone breast implants or any other surgical enhancement procedure, please be sure to consult with your physician. He or she will go over all of your options so you can make an informed decision.
